Length Converter — Convert Between Metric, Imperial & Nautical Units

Every conversion routes through metres as the anchor, so factors stay consistent across nanometres, survey-style imperial units, and nautical miles. Choose precision, optional scientific emphasis, and fraction-style readouts when you want a rational approximation—not just a raw float.

Unit converter Difficulty: easy Accuracy: high

How length conversion works

You multiply a measurement by the ratio of how many metres fit inside each unit. Going from feet to metres multiplies by 0.3048; going from metres to feet divides by that same factor. The tool also exposes the forward multiplier, its reciprocal, and a table of every supported unit so you can sanity-check against hand calculations.

Why it matters

  • Mixing US survey foot vs international foot is rare in web tools, but mixing miles with kilometres without SI routing causes silent drift—here everything normalises through metres.
  • Showing inverse factors helps you verify “1 inch equals how many mm?” style questions instantly.

Conversion checkpoints

  • Metre anchor: value_m = input × (metres per from-unit); output = value_m ÷ (metres per to-unit).
  • Nautical mile = 1852 m (international); statute mile = 1609.344 m.
  • Precision slider (2–12 dp) keeps engineering outputs readable without losing tiny tolerances.

Reference (routing)

  • All conversions pass through metres for a single source of truth.
  • Forward factor = (metres per from) ÷ (metres per to).
  • Inverse factor = reciprocal of the forward factor.

Example conversions

Input Approx. output
100 m → ft ≈ 328.084 ft (precision-dependent)
1 nmi → km 1.852 km exactly (definition)

Input rules

  • Value must be numeric; from and to units must be supported.

How to use Length Converter

  1. 1 Enter a positive length (decimals allowed).
  2. 2 Pick from-unit and to-unit (include nm, dm, dam, hm, nmi when needed).
  3. 3 Set precision and optional format: decimal, engineering-style, or fraction approximation.
  4. 4 Run the converter and read the highlighted value, multipliers, steps, and the all-units table.

Formula

  • 1 m = 1 000 mm = 100 cm = 10 dm
  • 1 international inch = 0.0254 m
  • 1 international foot = 0.3048 m
  • 1 statute mile = 1609.344 m
  • 1 nautical mile = 1852 m

When to raise precision

Use 6–12 decimals for lab or machining conversions; stick to 2–4 for UX, travel, or construction estimates.
